Defense Against the Dark Arts: An Introduction to the Policy Process
Young adult literature, from Rowling’s Harry Potter series to Collins’ Hunger Games Trilogy and beyond, provides numerous portrayals of public policy – from the context, actors and policies to their implementations and failures. These fictitious works illuminate the dark and light aspects of governance, bureaucracy, policy, advocacy, and leadership. In the Harry Potter series, students enrolled at Hogwarts were required to take a course called “Defense Against the Dark Arts” to learn how to defend themselves. Similarly, an understanding of the policy process and skills in advocacy prepare students to be active in civic discourse. This course integrates an introduction to the public policy process with literary examples. Students individually apply what they have learned to a public policy problem of their choice and develop an advocacy plan in support of the solution they believe to be optimal.
Introduction to Public Administration
